Participants in the Landsgemeinde 1989 in Hundwil Appenzell Ausserrhoden:

Men in the Ring is a documentary film from 1990 by Swiss director Erich Langjahr . The film is Langjahr's personal gift to mark the 700th year of the Swiss Confederation's birth.

Emergence

The film “Men in the Ring” was made for the anniversary “ 700 Years of the Confederation ” and forms the last part of a trilogy that also includes “ Morgarten takes place ” (1978) and “ Ex Voto ” (1986).

In 2020 the film was digitally restored with the help of Memoriav (Association for the Preservation of Switzerland's Audiovisual Heritage).

content

The men from Appenzell Ausserrhoden voted for or against cantonal women's suffrage at the Landsgemeinde in Hundwil in 1989  . The film is an ethnography of the events surrounding this centuries-old tradition . It shows how the traditional order comes into conflict with the new time and how the Appenzell people are excited about the historic day. The Landsgemeinde 1989 was the last male parish of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

In 1991, Andreas Furler wrote about this film in the Tagesanzeiger: “Instead of patronizing commentary, Erich Langjahr focuses in“ Men in the Ring ”on the ethnographic perspective that has always distinguished the best Swiss documentary films. Old, overdue braids should be cut off. But one clings to them, instinctively fearing that with them part of the traditional identity will be lost. In the arguments of the people of Appenzell in front of Langjahr's camera, which were sometimes absurd and sometimes met, it is precisely this conflict of understanding and feeling that is expressed. "

Awards

The film received not only attention in German-speaking Switzerland, but also in the French and Italian-speaking parts of the country and internationally.
