The Möckelhaus is a building in the city of Bad Doberan , which today as a city and bath museum shows the history of the city and the seaside resort of Doberan Heiligendamm .

history

History of origin

The builder Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel was called in the 1880s by the Grand Ducal Chamber for Church Affairs to restore the monastery church in Doberan. This complex task required the permanent presence of the builder on site, so that he had this house built according to his own plans in the Doberan monastery district between 1886 and 1888.

Usage history

He lived in the house until Möckel died in 1915. Möckel's widow also died in Bad Doberan in 1926. The house remained in the family's possession until 1936, after which it was handed over to the city of Bad Doberan for use as a museum. After the museum was closed in 1945, the house served, among other things, as a residence for resettlers , then as an agricultural school and later as a technical school for agriculture. The district adult education center moved there for a short time , and from 1958 to the end of 1980 the house housed the special school of the Bad Doberan district . After intensive reconstruction work in 1981/82, it was able to be reopened as a city museum.

Redevelopment

The Möckelhaus had to be closed in December 1997 due to severe structural damage. In 1998 the first construction phase began, in which the sponge renovation and the new covering of the entire roof were carried out. The second construction phase took place from 2002 to 2003. In this the complete interior work and extensive monument preservation work were carried out. During the renovation work, the outbuildings and the outdoor area were also renewed.

Todays use

Today the Bad Doberan City and Bath Museum is housed in the Möckelhaus. This shows in the permanent exhibition the history of the first German seaside resort of Doberan-Heiligendamm. There are paintings, ornaments and utensils, medical equipment and swimwear. On display are objects from the different development periods of the city, which offer an insight into life and everyday life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum's graphics collection is particularly impressive. The house has an adjoining garden. The registry office Bad Doberan carries out weddings in the Möckelhaus.
