Idyllic guild house

The idle guild house in Kempten

The listed Müßiggengelzunfthaus (also Zum Ostriches ) with the address Sigmund-Ullmann-Platz 1 is a former meeting house of the Ostrich Society founded in 1419 , a patrician society of wealthy residents of the imperial city of Kempten .

The two-storey building has a pink Renaissance facade from 1600, framed by colossal pilasters , and a portal flanked by half-columns. Above it are entablature decorated with lion heads and a volute gable with an animal head between two segment gables.

During the renovation of the old town of Kempten, a pilot project in the Federal Republic of Germany in the late 1950s, plans were made to demolish the Müßiggengelzunfthaus, which the preservationists and other organizations prevented. After all neighboring buildings had been demolished, the building stood in the middle of a large parking lot for a long time until it was integrated into the new development along Vogtstrasse.

Names

The building originally served the "Zunft" Zum Ostrich as a meeting place. In order to be a member of this "guild", the prerequisite was to manage a fortune and not to pursue gainful employment as a private citizen. The guild members were therefore popularly called the "idlers" . Later, the members of the guild themselves used this name as an ironic element. Over the years this name was transferred to the building.
