The Munich Imperial Castle in the Alter Hof is a museum on Munich's city history and a central information point about Bavarian museums.

The area accessible from the Alter Hof includes an information center set up by the State Office for the non-state museums in Bavaria as well as a permanent exhibition on the Alter Hof, the history of Munich and the history of the Wittelsbach family, housed in the Gothic vaulted halls of the Alter Hof.

Infopoint museums and castles in Bavaria

The Infopoint in the entrance area is managed by the State Office for Non-State Museums in Bavaria and serves as a central information point for around 1,300 non-state museums, gardens and castles in Bavaria. In addition to a reference library with relevant literature and guides, personal advice and information material (on museums, castles and gardens in Bavaria) are also offered here.

The Infopoint also oversees the digital information portals Museum Portal Munich  and Museum Portal Bavaria .

Permanent exhibition of the Munich Imperial Castle

The permanent exhibition in the historic vaulted rooms in the basement introduces the architectural and functional development of the Old Court and introduces its most prominent inhabitant, Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria . Interactive stations deepen individual topics. A separate film is dedicated to the history of Munich under the influence of the Wittelsbach rulers . In the vault there is also an exposed part of the castle wall, which is filled with Isar pebbles and thus corresponds to the construction of the first city wall, which was built around 1200.

Replicas of outstanding coins and medals from the time of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria, such as his Golden Bull , but also the currency of that time, the Munich Pfennig, have been on display since 2009 . The development of the Munich city coat of arms from monk to Münchner Kindl is evident from seals and medals; City views and individual buildings of Munich shown on it are presented in front of vedute from the 16th and 19th centuries.

A multimedia presentation in German and English offers an introduction to Bavarian history and starts every full and half hour.

Entry is free.
