META (for Media Ethics Award ) is a media prize that is awarded annually by students of the Stuttgart Media University as a seal of quality for outstanding contributions in the media.

The award goes to journalists , editors and other media professionals. The aim is to highlight positive examples of ethical and value-conscious journalism and thus to draw attention to ethical issues in the media industry. The award is given to contributions with a high potential for reflection, in which different interests and arguments are strongly differentiated and the ethical and social relevance of a topic is emphasized.

The award

The prize is always dedicated to a topic that the jury believes should receive special attention. The META was held for the first time in November 2003 as part of the III. HdM symposium on media ethics awarded.

The media ethics award sees itself as a seal of quality for value-oriented reporting and aims to draw attention to ethical issues. The long-term goal of the META project is to sensitize the students as future media workers to ethical issues in media production.

The jury

The META is awarded by a student jury mainly from the Media Management course, which, under the guidance of its professor Petra Grimm and research assistant Karla Neef, evaluates journalistic contributions in a differentiated manner. For this purpose, the students developed a catalog of criteria - the MediaCharta - which serves as a methodological basis for assessment.

MediaCharta

The MediaCharta serves as the basis for assessing the different types of contributions. This is a catalog of criteria that is created by students under the guidance of Professors Dr. Petra Grimm and Dr. Wilfried Mödinger was created especially for it.

The questions formulated in the MediaCharta aim at the quality features of socially responsible reporting to ensure the freedom of opinion and thus set the standards for the award of the prize. The criteria are divided into the areas of “intersubjectivity and perspective”, “transparency and separation”, “subjective truthfulness”, “completeness”, “neutrality” and “values and norms”.
