history
The shipping company was originally founded as Lauro Linien by Achille Lauro in the late 1960s. The shipping company operated two ships: the Angelina Lauro and the Achille Lauro , both of which were later lost in fire. In 1987 Flotta Lauro was bought by Mediterranean Shipping Company and renamed StarLauro Cruises . In 1995 the name was changed to Mediterranean Shipping Cruises and later to MSC Cruises .
MSC was founded in 1970 by the Italian captain Gianluigi Aponte , who now owns the company. Gianni Onorato has been the new CEO of MSC Cruises since September 2013. Prior to that, Pierfrancesco Vago held this position, who now leads the company alongside Gianni Onorato as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
The company initially operated older ships that were bought second-hand. In 2003, MSC Cruises began expanding the cruise fleet : the first new ship to be put into service was the MSC Lirica (59,058 GT). In 2004 the sister ship MSC Opera followed , as did the ships European Vision and European Stars (each 58,625 GT) of the bankrupt Festival Crociere SpA, which were taken over as MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia .
MSC recorded high growth in the cruise market and ordered more newbuildings. In 2006 the MSC Musica (90,409 GT) was put into service, followed by the sister ships MSC Orchestra (2007) and MSC Poesia (2008). The largest cruise ship built up to then for a European shipping company, the MSC Fantasia (137,936 GT), was put into service in December 2008, the almost identical MSC Splendida followed in July 2009. In May 2012 the MSC Divina followed . For the first time, all three ships of the Fantasia class each have 28 Aurea Spa Suites. Since March 1, 2010, the Musica class ship MSC Magnifica has been traveling. All ships were built by the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in St. Nazaire. In May 2012 the new MSC Divina was put into service.
In March 2013, another new build for MSC Cruises, the MSC Preziosa, was delivered . Originally the Libyan state shipping company GNMTC wanted to use the ship as Phenicia , but for financial reasons the newbuilding was taken over by MSC Cruises.
In March 2014, two ships of the “Vista” project with delivery in 2017 and 2019 were ordered from STX France and two more ships were optioned. The first ship was put into service as MSC Meraviglia in 2017. The MSC Bellissima followed in 2019.
The four ships of the Lirica class were extended and modernized at Fincantieri in Italy from 2014 to the end of 2015.
In February 2016, two more ships were ordered from STX France. They are referred to as the Meraviglia Plus class, a revised version of the Meraviglia class. The delivery of these new buildings should take place by September 2020. The first ship, the MSC Grandiosa , was handed over to the shipping company on October 31, 2019. The name of the fourth ship was announced as MSC Virtuosa . In addition, a fifth ship was ordered with delivery in 2023, which is to have an LNG drive.
In May 2014, two ships with the project name “Seaside” were ordered from Fincantieri in Italy and an option was agreed. The ships will each be measured at around 154,000 GT. The delivery of the type ship MSC Seaside took place in November 2017, the sister ship MSC Seaview was delivered in June 2018. In addition, an option for a third ship with delivery in 2021 was agreed. When the MSC Seaside was delivered , this and another ship were finally ordered for delivery in 2021 and 2023 . However, with around 169,000 GT and 339 meters in length, these ships are larger than the type ship and are referred to as the Seaside EVO class.
In 2015, MSC announced that it wanted to convert an island between Miami and Nassau, which was previously used for sand mining, into a resort. The island is 35 hectares in size and is scheduled to open in November 2019, following originally planned completion in early 2018. [outdated]
In April 2016, the shipping company also announced the order for two more ships from STX France and the agreement of two options. The delivery of the first World Class ship is LNG . On October 31, 2019, the name of the first ship with MSC Europe was announced. At the beginning of 2020, two more ships were ordered for delivery in 2025 and 2027 .
planned for 2022 . The second newbuilding is to be delivered in 2024 , the optioned ships in 2025 and 2026. The ships will be measured at 200,000 GT and powered byIn May 2016 it was announced that MSC had entered into a partnership with CAISSA Touristic Group . As a result, the MSC Lirica will run for a two-year test run in China. The design of the MSC Lirica has been adapted to the Chinese market.
In June 2018 it was announced that a third ship in the Meraviglia Plus class
had been ordered from STX France with delivery in 2023 . Like the World Class ships, the as yet unnamed ship will be powered by LNG.In October 2018 it was announced that Fincantieri had ordered four more ships. These are named with the title “Luxury Class”. They will each have 64,000 GT and 481 cabins. The ships are to be delivered between 2023
and 2026 .On November 26, 2018, construction began on the MSC Seashore , the first ship in the Seaside EVO class.
