Machineri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Machineri (other spellings Manchineri, Maniteneri, Matxineri, Maxineri ) are an indigenous ethnic group in the border area of Brazil and Bolivia . They reached their current habitat 2,500–5,000 years ago. Their settlement area overlaps with that of the Yaminawá . They speak an Arawak language. They try to keep the traditions. Men take care of hunting, fishing and farming. Women plant cotton and herbs for medicinal purposes.

In Brazil they live in the state of Acre on the border with Peru in the Mamoadate Indian sanctuary (since 1987, 3,136 km²), on the banks of the Rio Yaco in the area of the communities of Sena Madureira and Assis Brasil . In 1999 459 machineri lived there. So far, they have been spared invasions. Health care and training are inadequately provided by government agencies and Protestant missionaries. The latter leads to conflicts between converts and non-missionaries.

In Bolivia, the Machineri live in the Pando department in the Bolpebra municipality , 450 people live in the San Miguel municipality . Most of them have relocated from Brazil in the last 30 years, but keep crossing borders to trade.
