Madeline S. "Maddie" Rooney (born July 7, 1997 in Duluth , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been playing for the University of Minnesota Duluth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association since the 2015/16 season . Rooney has been a member of the United States women's national ice hockey team since 2017 and is a two-time world and Olympic champion.

Career

Rooney spent her high school years at Andover High School in Andover , Minnesota , where she played between 2012 and 2015. After graduating from school in the summer of 2015, the goalkeeper moved to the University of Minnesota Duluth , where she stood between the posts while studying for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In the first year, she first shared the post in goal with her opponent, before she was the undisputed goalkeeper in the second year.

Following her sophomore year of college, Rooney was appointed to the United States women's national ice hockey team for the first time and took part in the 2017 World Cup with them. In the course of the tournament, which the Americans finished by winning the world title, Rooney made her international debut in the preliminary round. This ended with a shutout . As a result, the goalkeeper interrupted her studies in the summer of 2017 and was recruited by the US ice hockey association USA Hockey to prepare for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . After Rooney had already become a regular in the goal of the US girls at the 4 Nations Cup 2017 , she played four of the five games in the Olympic ice hockey tournament from the start and, with the lowest goals against all goalkeepers, made a significant contribution to the first US gold medal win in 20 years .
