Dancing on the Moon ( Dancing on the Moon ) is a Canadian children's film by Kit Hood made in 1997.

action

At the beginning of the film you can see Maddy still sleeping and playing Frisbee with her stuffed dog Rex in her dream . When she wakes up, she realizes that she has overslept and can no longer say goodbye to her older sister, who is leaving her parents' home. Maddy can only wave to her sister and blames Rex for not waking her. On the same day there is a sports festival at Maddy's school. Her secret admirer Freddy Green takes a picture of her hugging Maddy. Then she reacts very annoyed because she just isn't interested in boys yet. On the sports field, she has to take part in a relay race for an injured classmate. Before the race she talks to her stuffed dog Rex in the presence of her two friends, Wendy and Sarah. When her friends notice this, they say Maddy is sometimes like a little child. When Maddy threatens to lose during the race, Rex comes to life in her child's imagination and helps her win the race after all. However, Maddy collapses shortly after the race and unexpectedly gets help from Freddy Green, who is massaging her leg. Horrified, she disappears with her two friends.

When the three of them are sitting in a restaurant a little later and Maddy wants to leave it, Freddy runs after her because he wants to give her the photo. Maddy drives away without saying anything. After Maddy's school graduation, Maddy and her friends say goodbye to their teacher, Mr. Gordon. Freddy appears in front of the school and still wants to give her the photo. This time she accepts it without a word. In the evening Maddy speaks to Rex again, until suddenly a taxi pulls up and her aunt Ruth gets out. Aunt Ruth stays with us and, to Maddy's horror, is supposed to sleep in her room. The next day Maddy takes piano lessons and survives them with the help of Rex. When she is about to go home, Freddy approaches her again to get a date with her. She ignores him and does not respond to any conversation. A day later she is on the beach with her two friends. When the three arrive at Maddy's home, Maddy's brother Tim comes towards them. Sarah lets it be known that she is interested in Tim. The three girls go to Maddy's room. There, Wendy and Sarah notice that Maddy still has Freddy's photo and tease her about it. The next evening the three girls are at a party and Maddy has an argument with Sarah. Sarah still thinks Maddy is acting like a toddler just because Maddy is playing with Rex in her imagination. Shortly thereafter, Maddy and Wendy go to get something to eat, while Sarah flirts with an older boy and kisses him afterwards. When Maddy's little brother runs away, Freddy tries to help her catch him again. They both collide and he kisses her on the mouth. Maddy's older brother intervenes and is pushed away by Freddy, after which they both start fighting.

Maddy brings her little brother home and talks to Aunt Ruth about the moon and love. When Maddy scolds Rex in her room for not protecting her from Freddy, she notices that someone has taken her picture of Freddy out of the trash. A day later, Freddy wants to apologize to Maddy and then speaks to Aunt Ruth. Maddy later learns that it was Aunt Ruth who put the photo back. In the evening, Aunt Ruth apologizes to Maddy and tells her that it is written on the moon that you shouldn't let yourself be stopped from dancing on the moon. The next morning, Maddy and Wendy go swimming, despite a violent thunderstorm. Maddy jumps into the water and is swept away by the current. She can be saved, but she learns from her father that Freddy was not so lucky and drowned in the water. At least now, Maddy realizes that Rex cannot help her in really dangerous situations because he only comes to life in her child's imagination. She now accepts that she will never be able to speak to Rex again and that she will have to grow up.

Maddy is comforted by her family and goes to Freddy's funeral. While the priest is delivering his sermon, Maddy remembers the dream where she is playing Frisbee with Rex. Instead of Rex, Freddy jumps out of the water and catches the throwing disc. Maddy goes to the coffin and says goodbye to Freddy by putting the photo in the coffin for him. At home, Maddy is supposed to go to her grandmother's and talk to her. While both of them are playing a board game, Maddy receives a diary from her grandmother. It is the same diary that Maddy's grandmother got from her grandmother. A little later, Maddy and Wendy are sitting in a restaurant and on leaving Maddy thanks Wendy for their friendship. At home, Maddy finds a photo of her aunt Ruth, on which she can be seen with her childhood sweetheart. To Maddy's amazement, it turns out that Aunt Ruth's childhood sweetheart is Maddy's former teacher, Mr. Gordon. When the entire family is about to go to a wedding, the car won't start and they take the old tractor that Maddy's parents repaired. Sarah is also at the wedding party, but she does not speak to Maddy. When Maddy is briefly alone, she says goodbye to Rex with the request to take care of her little brother Jamie. Then she gives her beloved stuffed dog to her brother. Later, Maddy dances and even flirts with a boy, while Sarah dances with Maddy's brother. Little Jamie fell asleep during the long wedding celebration and dreams of playing Frisbee with Rex, just like his sister Maddy once did.
