Magistrates' Court (Belize)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Magistrates' Court is the lowest jurisdiction in the Belize legal system . These courts are codified under Section 3 (1) of the Inferior Courts Act . The courts are responsible for criminal offenses as well as civil matters. If the process is circumstantial or a capital crime , the court only conducts a preliminary inquiry . The court then decides whether the indictment will be admitted and sends the case to the Supreme Court . Judges are called magistrates and sit on a bench .

Belize is divided into six different legal disciplines. Half of the districts have only one court while the other half of the districts have multiple courts in one district:

  • Belize Judicial District - The district has eight Magistrates 'Courts and one more Magistrates' Court in San Pedro Town responsible for the surrounding islands
  • Toledo Judicial District
  • Stann Creek Judicial District - The district has two magistrates' courts in Dangriga Town and Independence Village
