Maillot Rojo (dt. Red jersey ) is the name for the jersey of the leader of the overall ranking of the Vuelta a España .

The color of the leader jersey changed several times, since 2010 a red jersey has been awarded. It was orange during the first two events of the Vuelta. The first to wear the orange jersey was Antoine Dignef , who won the opening stage of the first Vuelta a España in 1935 from Madrid to Valladolid . The Belgian Gustaaf Deloor won the first edition of the tour .

Tony Rominger , Roberto Heras and Alberto Contador are record winners of the Vuelta with three successes each. Spanish drivers were able to win the race the most with 31 wins. With 45 days in the jersey of the overall leader, the Swiss Alex Zülle is the record holder and twice managed to take overall victory. With Rudi Altig , Rolf Wolfshohl and Jan Ullrich , three Germans have so far won the stage race.

The leader of the points classification at the Giro d'Italia was also awarded a red jersey for a while, the Maglia Rossa .
