The turnip ( Brassica rapa subsp. Rapa var. Majalis ) or turnip , also called navette , (Navet is the name for the turnip in general in the French language ), is a vegetable with edible roots . It is a special form of turnip. It is closely related to the Teltower turnip and the autumn turnip . The latter, however, is harvested later and becomes a little larger. May beets get their name because they are sown in early spring and can be harvested in May.

Cultivation

The white-purple or white turnip is an old cultivated plant that was used in ancient times . Before the introduction of the potato , it played an important role in Europe. It is rich in various vitamins , minerals and protein . The peel contains a relatively high proportion of mustard oils . If the turnip is eaten raw, the skin should be removed. The leaves of the turnip can be processed like spinach ; in some areas only the leaf stalks are eaten as turnip stems . The root itself can be boiled like any other turnip; however, for reasons of taste, they should only be steamed .

The turnip is sown either in spring or in July to August for the autumn harvest. It is harvested after six to eight weeks . The row spacing should be 20–25 cm, and it is separated with 10–15 cm. The plant needs loamy , humus and sandy soils.

heraldry

A turnip is part of the coat of arms of Keutschach am See and was the coat of arms of Leonhard von Keutschach .
