The location of Malamocco in the Veneto region , Italy

Malamocco is a small place on the Lido that separates the Venice lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. It is close to the porto di Malamocco , one of the three porti that secure the tidal movement in the lagoon and prevent the lagoon from silting up .

Similar to Venice, the cityscape of the small town, whose inhabitants live mainly from tourism, is shaped by canals.

Along with Torcello , Caorle , Jesolo , Heracliana and Murano, Malamocco was one of the island communes of early Veneto. The church leader of these communes was the Patriarch of Grado , and politically these communities were subordinate to the Eastern Roman Empire .

The first Doges of Venice , whose counting according to tradition begins with the possibly only mythical Anafestus Paulucius (reign 697 to 717), initially resided in Heracliana before the Doges' seat was moved to Malamocco in the middle of the 8th century - according to tradition in 742 under the Doge Deusdedit , who had his residence in Malamocco briefly as magister militum and from around 742 to 755 as doge. He was overthrown by Galla ( Johannes Diaconus , II, 17). After his fall, barely a year later, he was succeeded by Domenico Monegario , who was assigned two magistri militum to control his government activities. His successor Mauritius , followed by his son Johannes , tried to found a dynasty. The clashes between the Franconian Empire and Byzantium produced corresponding factions in Malamocco, battles from which Obelerio Antenoreo 804 emerged as the Pro-Frankish victor. However, he was overthrown in 810, and tellingly, around 829, with the help of his followers in Malamocco, he tried again to overthrow the Doge, who now resided in Rialto . Agnello Particiaco had pushed through this move at the beginning of his reign (810-827). Malamocco remained a port and trading center, but no longer had any political significance. This was especially true after Obelerius' attempt to regain power.

In 1106/07 the place was completely destroyed by an earthquake and a devastating storm surge. The subsequently newly founded Malamocco emerged further to the west. This settlement, already mentioned in the sources as Malamocco nuova in 1159 , was destroyed by the Genoese who invaded the lagoon during the Chioggia War .

In recent times, Malamocco has been adapted to the needs of growing tourism . So the whole area became a pedestrian zone, a new port was created in the center, which is accessible through a canal that separates Malamocco from the island of Lido (the area is accessed via bridges).

The MO.SE project is a technical flood protection project for the Venice Lagoon . Early prototypes of structures were tested in Malamocco. It has been protected from floods since the late 1990s by using hydraulic steel planks to block access to the Malamocco canals when floods are announced. A much larger version, with a different working method, is being built in the Porta di Malamocco, the much-used port entrance south of the Lido, to protect the whole of Venice from floods and to isolate the lagoon from new influx if necessary.
