Mamaia is the northern district of the district capital Constanța in the district of the same name in Romania .

Geographical location

Mamaia in a nautical chart from 1917

Mamaia is located on a tongue of land about seven kilometers long and about 350 meters wide between the Black Sea and the freshwater lake Siut-Ghiol, also known as Lake Kanara . Located on the DJ86 county road and the Black Sea coast, Mamaia is a well-known seaside resort in Romania.

The Black Sea coast of Mamaia has between 40 and 300 m wide, light and fine mineral and shell sandstone beaches that are long and extensive. The beaches here slope gently into the sea and are therefore popular with families with children. Behind the beaches runs the promenade with a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, ice cream parlors and other shops as well as banks, post offices, pharmacies, etc. Behind it is partly a rich tree population.

History and economy

Hotel Rex, named after King Carol II , who laid the foundation stone for the hotel financed by the Romanian Railway Administration on August 15, 1936 . The construction must be seen in the context of Royal Decree 322 of February 29, 1936, amended by Decree 3047 of August 31, 1938, which promulgated the “Law on the Organization of Tourism”. The luxury hotel became a royal summer residence after it opened in 1938.

The development of Mamaias is closely related to tourism in Romania. Mamaia experienced its heyday in the 1960s to the 1980s. For tourists from Eastern Europe, the Romanian and Bulgarian Black Sea coasts are one of the few opportunities to experience a summer holiday by the sea with constantly warm weather and good bathing opportunities.

Because of the low prices by Western standards, Mamaia was also discovered by German tour operators and offered as a package tour destination from the mid-1960s. The Romanian state saw a good source of income for foreign currency here , which led to brisk construction activity. At first only the south of Mamaia was developed, in the 1970s and 1980s to the north. Most of the hotels in the northern part are located directly on the sandy beach. Due to the narrow headland, there are usually no hotel buildings standing one behind the other. Although some hotels are not directly in the front line on the beach, they are in the back, shady green belt up to the main road. The distance to the beach is a maximum of 150 meters.

Mamaia experienced a clear turning point - just like all tourism in Romania - after the revolution of 1989 . The number of tourists from abroad fell rapidly. There was no money for urgent renovations and the hotels - if they were open at all - were run poorly. International tourism came to a virtual standstill in Mamaia and the place was mainly used only by locals.

In the mid-1990s, the state began to sell and privatize the hotels. However, some of the renovations did not progress at all, or only very slowly and slowly. In relation to this, the price level was quite high.

Mamaia is not a seaside resort in the classic sense, i.e. a grown and constantly populated urban suburb with a beach, hotels and urban infrastructure. The district is entirely geared towards tourism and is almost exclusively inhabited during the summer months. About 80 hotels are lined up along the entire length of the headland. In the high season there is a lot of activity and relaxation. In contrast to the Bulgarian golden or sunny beach , there are almost no foreign tourists to be found here. Rather, more than 90% of tourists come from their own country.

One of the first buildings erected here was the residence of the Romanian royal family. The building still stands today and is operated as a hotel. It is one of the most luxurious hotels in Mamaia and was once called "Internațional". After the revolution in 1989 it was privatized and has since been called "Rex", which indicates its historical importance. In February 2011 there was a fire there, as a result of which the hotel had to be shut down. After the building remained unchanged for 2 years, it is currently (2014) in a renovation phase.

tourism

The bathing season lasts from June to the end of August; the average daytime temperatures during this period are 25 to 30 ° C. The season usually ends at the beginning of September and the leisure activities are then noticeably reduced. There is actually no post-season, although it is offered by some tour operators. You can book trips there from mid-May and until the end of September. Most restaurants, bars and shops are closed outside of the high season.

Mamaia experienced another turning point in the tourist flows. Was Constanta airport directly served by Germany from the late 1990s to about 2,005 initially eight airports once a week, so this number is reduced quickly to five airports. After all, there was only one direct connection per week, whereby the passengers from all possible German airports were initially grouped together at one airport (Munich or Nuremberg) in order to be transported on to Constanța. But this connection was also canceled from 2011, so that from then on a direct connection from Germany to Constanța no longer exists.

Organized international tourism therefore almost no longer exists; 90 to 95% of the tourists present in the summer months are Romanians who travel to Mamaia themselves, mostly by car. Especially the population from Bucharest , 230 kilometers away, uses Mamaia for weekend trips.

Transport and traffic

Tourist means of transport in Mamaia consist of taxis, a bus network or horse-drawn carriages ( Fiakers ) and rental cars prepared for tourists . From 2004 a gondola lift will take you to around two kilometers and around 50 meters above sea level - near the Hotel Perla ( location ) and the Casino Mamaia ( location ) - the so-called Telegondola .

For airport Constanta currently (2015) flights to and from Istanbul , London and Milan offered. A few tour operators take advantage of the offer to offer a few hotels based on the entire Romanian Black Sea coast, and to fly the guests first to Varna in Bulgaria and then continue the journey to the Romanian coast by bus (approx. 160 km).
