Most of the Mandar are Muslim. Their settlement area lies along the coast between Mamuju , the capital of West Sulawesi, and Pare-Pare further south. Like the neighboring Makassar and Bugis in the South Sulawesi province , the Mandar have a long tradition as seafarers, traders and fishermen with their outrigger boats called Sandeq . The Sandeq are the pride of traditional mandar culture.

The Mandar language belongs to the Austronesian language family . It is closely related to the Toraja-Sa'dan language.
