Manfred Luchterhandt

Manfred Luchterhandt (born November 25, 1966 in Detmold ) is a German art historian . His focus is on the history of art in Italy and the Middle Ages , in particular the Mediterranean and the Romanesque countries.

Life

After graduating from high school in Detmold , Manfred Luchterhandt studied history, German studies , art history and archeology at the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg , in Padua and Rome . In 1993 he passed the first state examination in history and German. In 1997 he received his doctorate in Würzburg with a dissertation on the Cathedral of Parma . From 1994 to 2000 he was a doctoral scholarship holder and research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome ( Bibliotheca Hertziana ), since 2001 research assistant and academic senior counselor at the University of Münster , where in 2007 he conducted a study on papal court culture in the early Middle Ages qualified as a professor . After further guest stays at the Max Planck Society and substitute professorships at the University of Erlangen , he has been Professor of Art History of the Middle Ages at the University of Göttingen since 2011 . From 2017 to 2020 he was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty, at times also spokesman for the Dean's Council and member of the steering committee for the Excellence Initiative.

Manfred Luchterhandt is the brother of the music theorist and church musician Gerhard Luchterhandt .
