Manfred Sohn (born September 9, 1955 in Braunschweig ) is a former German politician (DKP, Die Linke ). He was chairman of the Lower Saxony State Association of the Left and from 2008 to 2013 a member of the Lower Saxony State Parliament .

Life and work

After attending school in Hanover and Braunschweig ( Abitur in 1975 at the Gaußschule in Braunschweig), Sohn completed a degree in social sciences at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , which he completed in 1980 as a social economist. He then did his community service and was then from 1983 to 1987 Federal Managing Director of the Drugs and Intoxicants Association in the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband . In 1988 he received his doctorate as Dr. disc. pole. at the University of Göttingen with the thesis problem areas of aftercare in helping drug addicts and possible ways of improving this aftercare, taking into account the framework conditions of the social security system in the Federal Republic of Germany . Sohn has been with VGH Insurance in Hanover since 1987 , most recently as an authorized representative in sales. He is also a member of the full staff council and the supervisory board .

Manfred Sohn lives in Rittmarshausen , municipality of Gleichen , district of Göttingen . He has six children.

Political party

Son joined the Social Liberal Youth (SLJ) in Lower Saxony as a student and was also a member of the SLJ state executive. After the union of the SLJ with the German Young Democrats (DJD) he was chairman of the DJD district association in Hanover. During this time he was also a member of the FDP .

During his studies, Sohn first joined the Jusos and also became a member of the SPD . He later switched to the Marxist Student Union Spartakus (MSB) and became its chairman at the University of Göttingen. From 1977 to 2000, Sohn was a member of the German Communist Party (DKP). In the 1990s, Sohn was a member of the DKP party executive committee and the secretariat of the party executive committee. There he was responsible for Marxist theory and education as well as for liaison with the communist parties in the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan.

In 2002, Sohn became a member of the PDS . He was a member of the state board of the party "Die Linke" in Lower Saxony , from 2010 to 2015 as chairman of the state association. In 2015 he announced his resignation from the party. He justified it with a falling out with Diether Dehm and the other Lower Saxony members of the Bundestag left.

MP

In the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2008 , Manfred Sohn moved into the state parliament via the state list. There he was elected one of the two group leaders. He held this office until 2010. He was also the finance and budget policy spokesman for his parliamentary group.

In the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2013 , the left could not overcome the five percent hurdle with him as the top candidate , and he left the state parliament.

criticism

Sohn is particularly criticized by conservative political opponents for his statement that "the GDR was the more peaceful and socially fairer part of Germany for over 40 years" . In an article for the Ossietzky magazine in 2006, Sohn had adopted Hans Modrow's view with this statement .
