Manfred Stengl

Manfred Stengl (born April 1, 1946 in Salzburg , † June 6, 1992 in Douglas , Isle of Man ) was an Austrian luge , bobsleigh , motorcycle racer and Olympic champion .

Salzburg won with his partner Josef Feistmantl the gold medal in the doubles competition of the luge at the Olympics of Innsbruck in 1964 and chose to becoming the first Olympic champion in this discipline .

After the two Austrians in the first run with 50.57 sec. had already set a track record, they went into the second round with a reassuring lead and won the competition ahead of their compatriots Reinhold Senn and Helmut Thaler .

Manfred Stengl ended his career as a toboggan in 1971 and switched to bobsleigh . There he reached the bronze medal in the four-man bobsleigh at the 1975 World Championships .

Stengl had also been very successful in motorcycle racing . In 1969 he was Austrian national champion in the 350 cm³ class, 1973 winner of the Austrian TT. For years he drove on Aermacchi . In 1992 he had a fatal accident at the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man , in the TT-F1 class.
