Manolis Papathomopoulos

Manolis Papathomopoulos ( Greek Μανόλης Παπαθωμόπουλος , * 1930 ; † April 20, 2011 in Ioannina ) was a Greek classical philologist , Byzantinist and neo-Greekist and professor of classical philology at the University of Ioannina .

Papathomopoulos was mainly active in the field of edition philology in the field of Hellenistic, late antique, Byzantine and early modern Greek literature. He dealt intensively with the tradition of Aesop as well as the Aesop Vites and the translations of Latin authors ( heroid letters and metamorphoses of Ovid , the Disticha attributed to the elder Cato , the Consolatio philosophiae of Boethius and the writing De trinitate of Augustine ) by the Byzantine monk Maximos Planudes has published critical editions of Hellenistic and Imperial authors and texts ( Antoninus Liberalis , Oppian and the Apollodorus Libraries ) as well as of vernacular texts from the Byzantine period ( an entertaining story of four-legged friends , a satirical story in the vernacular from the 14th century). Century and, together with Elizabeth Jeffreys , the War for Troy , a romance novel in verse from the 14th century, based on the Roman de Troie by Benoît de Sainte-Maure ). He has published concordances on Nikander , Oppian, Apollonios Rhodios , Quintus Smyrnaeus , Aeschylus , Sophocles at Georg Olms Verlag ; concordances on Plautus and Terence have been announced.

Papathomopoulos was one of Andreas Papandreou's confidants and, together with him and others, founded the ΠΑΣΟΚ on September 2, 1974 in Papandreou's house on Kastri .
