Pedro Juan Manuel Torres , called Mantorras , (born March 18, 1982 in Huambo ) is a former Angolan football player . At the beginning of the 2000s he was considered one of the greatest storm talents in Africa and took part with Angola in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Career

In the club

Shortly after Pedro Manuel Torres' birth, his father died and he grew up as a half-orphan in the civil war country of Angola. When he was 15 years old, his mother died too. Mantorras learned to play football on the street and made his debut in the first Angolan league for Progresso Associação do Sambizanga at the age of 16 . A little later, the young scouts of FC Barcelona discovered him . So he went to Spain and tried his hand at Barça B , in which, however, he could not prevail. So he moved to Portugal to FC Alverca . In just two years he made his breakthrough in the first division team and in 2000/01 he had a very successful season with ten goals in 26 games.

He then moved to the top club Benfica Lisbon for five million euros , where he seamlessly continued his performance and became a regular player in the first year. In 2002 a serious knee injury set him back and he was not used for two years. He was able to avert the impending end of his career. He returned to the team in 2004/05 and helped Benfica win the championship by scoring five goals in fifteen games. However, he never fully recovered from his injury and no longer returned to the shape of the time before his injury. In the following seasons he came only to a few missions. He played his last league game in the 2008/09 season. In 2011 he finally ended his career at the age of just 28. A comeback attempt at the Angolan football club 1.º de Agosto was unsuccessful.

In the national team

With the U-21 of his home country , he was part of the team that won the 2001 African Junior Championship, the country's first major title. In the same year he was voted the best young player in Africa.

He played for the Angolan national team from 2001 to 2010. After the health-related compulsory break, he was in action for qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and contributed to the country's historic, first-time qualification with a goal against Gabon . He was also in Angola's World Cup squad and was used in two games. He was eliminated with his team in the preliminary round. Although he played no role at the time in the club, Mantorras took part in 2010 with Angola at the African Cup of Nations and completed his last international match in the group game against Malawi .
