Manuel José Macário Cardinal do Nascimento Clemente (born July 16, 1948 in Torres Vedras , Portugal ) is Patriarch of Lisbon .

Life

Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente studied history at the University of Lisbon . He entered the Olivais Seminary in 1972 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology . He received on June 29 in 1979 by António Cardinal Ribeiro the priesthood . In 1979 he received his doctorate in historical theology from the Catholic University of Portugal . Since 1975 he has taught church history at the Catholic University. From 1980 to 1989 he served on the leadership team of the Olivais seminary; In 1989 he became vice rector and in 1997 rector.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Pinhel and auxiliary bishop in Lisbon on November 6, 1999 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Patriarch of Lisbon, José da Cruz Policarpo , on January 22, 2000; Co- consecrators were Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão , Bishop Emeritus of Beja , and Albino Mamede Cleto , Coadjutor Bishop of Coimbra . In the Portuguese Bishops' Conference he headed the Episcopal Commission for Culture and Social Affairs from 2005 to 2011.

On February 22, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Porto . The solemn inauguration ( enthronement ) took place on March 25 of the same year. In addition, Benedict XVI called him. Member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications on December 29, 2011 .

Pope Francis appointed him Patriarch of Lisbon on May 18, 2013 . On June 21, 2013, he was elected President of the Portuguese Bishops' Conference to succeed Cardinal José da Cruz Policarpo . Manuel Clemente was its Vice President from 2011.

In the consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Antonio in Campo Marzio in the college of cardinals .

As patriarch and metropolitan, he welcomed Pope Francis on May 13, 2017, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady in 1917 in the international pilgrimage site of Fatima . In June of the same year Cardinal Clemente took part in the first Eucharistic Congress of Angola as the papal special envoy .

Manuel Clemente is a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and has been Grand Prior of the Order in Portugal since 2013 .
