Manuel Cuadra (born in Lima , Peru in 1952 ) is a Peruvian architect and architectural historian. He is Professor of Architectural History / History of the Built Environment at the University of Kassel . The focus of his teaching is the integrated consideration of architecture, city and landscape from the beginnings of settlement history to the present.

Life

After studying architecture in Lima (1970–1976), Manuel Cuadra completed his doctorate at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1980–1984, 1988) on the subject of architecture in Latin America. The Andean states in the 19th and 20th centuries. From 1986 to 1990 he worked as a research assistant and lecturer in the Department of Design and Building Design under the direction of Günter Behnisch in the Department of Architecture at TU Darmstadt.

This was followed by teaching positions at the Art History Institute of Heidelberg University (1987–1995), at the Facultad de Arquitectura of the Universidad de Belgrano in Buenos Aires (1988) and at the Universidad de Talca in Chile, as well as a visiting professorship for the history and theory of architecture at the Städelschule Frankfurt (1995-1997). As a result of a substitute professorship (2003–2004) at the University of Kassel for architectural history and design in the department of architecture, urban planning, landscape planning, he received the full professorship for the department of architectural history / history of the built environment in 2005.

In addition to teaching the history of architecture, the city and the cultural landscape, his research activities focus on Latin America.

Due to his freelance work as an author and curator, Manuel Cuadra was appointed associate member of the Association of German Architects (BDA) and a full member of the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA), which he has served as a member of the board of directors since 2005 and as general secretary since 2008 . In 2011 he received an honorary doctorate from the Peruvian Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería .

Since 2015 he has headed the DFG project “Dreams and Spaces of a Revolution / Architecture in Cuba 1959–2009: Historical and Theoretical Backgrounds / Periodization / Reference Objects”. In addition to his research activities in Latin America, Cuadra maintains international relations and a. to China. He has been a member of various juries since 1997.
