Manuel Simó

Manuel Simó Rojas (born June 30, 1916 in San Francisco de Macorís , † September 14, 1988 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican composer, conductor and music teacher.

Simó attended the Academia de Música and studied there with Rafael Pimentel and Oguis Negrette . At the same time he was a member of the Banda Municipal de Música in his hometown. In Santo Domingo he became a member of the Banda del Ejército under the direction of José Dolores Cerón , who taught him orchestral conducting. He also attended Manuel Beraseain's class for harmony .

In 1941 he became a percussionist of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional and a student of its director Enrique Casal Chapí . In the late 1940s he received a scholarship to study for four years at the Conservatorio Kolisher in Montevideo, where he continued his training with Casal Chapí.

Upon his return, Simó became Professor of Composition and succeeded Juan Francisco García as director of the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Santo Domingo. From 1952 he was director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional ; In 1981 he was appointed compositor Emérito de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional .

Simó composed a. a. several symphonies and other orchestral works, sonatas for violin and piano, string quartets, a quartet for wind instruments and guitar. He received an award at the Gran Concurso Centenario in 1944 for his Cantata para cuarteto for soloists, large choir and orchestra .
