Manzana de los Jesuitas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Manzana Jesuítica is a block in the Argentine city of Córdoba , which was built by the Jesuits in the 17th century as the headquarters of their activities in the Spanish province of Paraguay in the viceroyalty of Peru .

The block, located right in the center not far from Plaza San Martín , is one of 70 that were identified when the city was founded. The Jesuits took possession of it in 1599 and resided there until they were expelled in 1767. In order to finance their activities, they acquired several estancias in the area. The monuments preserved the block and the building of the estancias belong since 2000 to the World Heritage of UNESCO .

Architectural monuments in detail

In the Rectorate's patio

  • Compañía de Jesús Church . It is the oldest surviving church in Argentina (built in 1671). The altar comes from Cuzco, Peru . To the left of the church is the graduate hall of the University of Córdoba in a chapel that also dates from this period .
  • Chapel of the Jesuit residence , also from 1671, one of the masterpieces of Argentine colonial architecture
  • Rectorate of the University of Cordoba , founded in 1613, with a magnificent white facade and a square patio .
  • Colegio Convictorio de Nuestra Señora de Montserrat . Built in 1687 by the Jesuits, an important school resided here. Today the school still exists, but it depends on the University of Cordoba. Currently (as of June 2005) renovation.

The palaeontological museum is located in the same block in a building from the 19th century , which among other things houses a fossil of the now extinct, largest spider in the world (34 cm long).
