María Luisa Escobar

María Luisa González de Escobar (born December 5, 1903 in Valencia , † May 14, 1985 in Caracas ) was a Venezuelan composer , pianist and singer ( soprano ).

Escobar received her first piano and composition training at the Colegio Lourdes in her hometown, which she continued at the Instituto Weligart Habay on Curaçao . In 1925 she made two recordings in Mexico on which she sang the songs Canción de amor , La Golondrina , La paloma and La verdadera española .

From 1928 to 1931 Escobar studied in Paris with Roger-Ducasse and Gabriel Fauré . She married the musician José Antonio Escobar Saluzzo , with whom she produced the first records in Venezuela after her return. In 1931 she founded the Ateneo de Caracas , which she directed until 1943. In 1947 she founded the Asociación Venezolana de Autores y Compositores (AVAC).

At the Teatro Municipal de Caracas in 1941 her musical comedy Orquídeas Azules was performed based on a libretto by Lucila Palacios . At the same time she recorded various works for piano and orchestra with the Orquestra Don Américo y sus Caribes in Buenos Aires. For this line-up, Escobar composed several works in the 1940s in which she used themes from the folklore of her country. Her Concierto Sentimental was performed by the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra. On the occasion of the III. Juegos Bolivarianos In 1951 the world premiere of their ballet suite Guaicaipuro took place.

Escobar's numerous boleros achieved great popularity , the most famous of which was Desesperanza . Sung for the first time by the Venezuelan baritone Eduardo Lanz , Desesperanza became internationally known through the recording with Alfredo Sadel . The piece was declared Canción del Año in 1947 .
