Maracay [ma.ɾaˈkai̯] is the capital of the Venezuelan state of Aragua and is located on the eastern bank of Lake Valencia in the municipality of Girardot .
Until well into the 20th century, Maracay was primarily of importance for indigo cultivation and trade. During the dictatorship of Juan Vicente Gómez , the city grew rapidly and it was founded. a. a zoo, a bullring and an opera house. Gómez's mausoleum is also in Maracay.
The city is still important for its museums, such as the Museo Aeronáutico Coronel Luis Hernán Paredes , as a bishopric and for its military facilities. In Venezuela, Maracay is known as Ciudad Jardín , i.e. the garden city.
