Marc Lalonde

Marc Lalonde PC OC QC (* 26 July 1929 in L'Ile-Perrot , Quebec ) is a Canadian lawyer and former politician of the Liberal Party .

Life

After attending school, Lalonde studied law and graduated with a licentiate (LL.L.). He completed a subsequent postgraduate course with a Master of Arts (MA) and then worked as a lawyer . He began his political career as a candidate for the Liberal Party when he was first elected as a member of the House of Commons in the election of October 30, 1972 and represented the constituency of Outremont until July 1984 .

In November 1972 he was appointed Minister for National Health and Welfare to the 20th Federal Cabinet by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and held this position until September 1977. He was also Minister for Amateur Sports from November 1972 to September 1976 and from August 1974 to June 1979 Minister with responsibility for the status of women. After an additional assignment as Minister of State for relations between the federal government and the provinces and territories of Canada from September 1977 to November 1978, he was Minister of Justice and Attorney General until the end of Trudeau's first term in June 1979 .

When Trudeau was able to form the 22nd Federal Cabinet as Prime Minister after the Liberal Party's election victory on February 18, 1980 , he became Minister of Energy, Mining and Resources in March 1980. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed finance minister in September 1980 and retained this ministerial office from June to September 1984 in the 23rd federal government , which was in office for only 79 days, and was chaired by Prime Minister John Turner . During this time he was also the responsible regional minister in the federal cabinet for Québec from February 1981 to 1984.

After leaving government and parliament, he returned to work as a lawyer. In 1989 he was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada . The reason for this honor was his many years of service in public affairs in several functions and as Federal Minister, which earned him national and international recognition. In 2004 he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame . In the 1990s he served as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague on two cases .
