Marcel Hénaff

Marcel Hénaff (born July 21, 1942 in Hauteluce ; † June 11, 2018 in San Diego , California ) was a French philosopher and ethnologist , since 1988 professor of French literature , philosophy and anthropology at the University of California, San Diego .

Life

Hénaff studied at the University of Copenhagen and at the Collège international de philosophie in Paris, then ethnology at the University of Abidjan . He completed a degree in philosophy in Paris with the state examination ( Agrégation de Philosophie ).

He emerged scientifically through his ethnological research in the tradition of Marcel Mauss . Like Mauss, he localized the source of the social in the elementary exchange of gift and counter-gift. The Romanist Wolfram Nitsch presented Hénaff's thoughts on the future shape of cities (“La ville qui vient”) in the context of contemporary urbanism theories.
