Marcel H. Bickel

Marcel Henry Bickel (born October 14, 1927 in Basel ; † August 1, 2017 in Bremgarten ) was a Swiss biochemist , pharmacologist and medical historian .

Bickel received his Dr. phil. in biochemistry at the University of Basel , worked from 1959 to 1964 as a pharmacologist in Rome and Washington, and taught biochemistry from 1964 to 1976 at the University of Bern, where he received a full professorship. From 1977 to 1993 he worked at the Pharmacological Institute of the same university and from 1993 as a freelance researcher at the Institute for Medical History.

Bickel also held visiting professorships:

• 1976-1977 Department of Pharmacology, St. Mary's Hospital Medical School of the University of London
• 1983–1984 College of Pharmacy, University of Arizona Medical School, Tucson
• 1990–1991 History of Medicine, Center for the Health Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
• 1993 Institute of the History of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University , Baltimore

He has published in the fields of pharmacology, toxicology and medical history .
