Marcela Machotková (born October 12, 1931 in Turnov , † December 7, 2021 in Brandýs nad Labem ) was a Czechoslovak opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Marcela Machotková, born Marcela Johnová , was fascinated by singing from an early age. She also played the piano and during her vocal studies at the Prague Conservatory had the option of choosing whether to major in singing or playing the piano. Her teachers at the Prague Conservatory, the singing teacher Jarmila Pěničková-Rochová belonging contralto Olga Borová-Valoušková and the Czechoslovak baritone Zdeněk Otava .

After graduating in 1954, she was initially a soloist in the Vítězná křídla military art ensemble in Prague. After her mother's death in 1960 she applied to be a chorister at the Liberec National Theater , but received a contract as a soloist and made her debut there as the princess in the opera Šelma sedlák by Antonín Dvořák . At the National Theater in Liberec she sang many important roles in the field of lyric soprano and had her first successes in the Smetana and Dvořák repertoire, among others. as Marie in The Bartered Bride and as Vendulka in The Kiss .

At the beginning of the 1964/65 season she was engaged at the Pilsen Theater, where her first role was the main character in the opera Šárka by Zdeněk Fibich . Other roles were Libuše , Tatjana , the title role in the opera Zuzana Vojířová by Jiří Pauer , Musetta in La Bohème , Leonore in Fidelio and Desdemona in Otello , where she was already a soloist at the premiere on October 8, 1966 at the National Theater in Prague.

After guest appearances in 1963 and 1965, she was engaged at the National Theater in Prague in July 1966 , where she stood out as an interpreter of the Czech repertoire. Her roles included Libuše, Julie in The Jacobin , Rusalka and the Princess in Die Teufelskäthe . In Czech operas she also sang Libyna in Šárka or Eva in the opera of the same name by Josef Bohuslav Foerster . From Leoš Janáček she sang the Karolka in Jenůfa and the double roles cock / jay in The Cunning Little Vixen . Her roles also included Lenio in Bohuslav Martinů's Greek Passion and the princess in Rudolf Karel's opera Gevatterin Tod ( Smrt kmotřička ). In December 1988 she ended her stage career with the role of Ludmila in The Bartered Bride and went into retirement.

Machotková's stage repertoire outside of the Slavic repertoire included Pamina , Donna Elvira , Amelia in Un ballo in maschera and Simon Boccanegra , Mimì in La Bohème , the title roles in Strauss' operas Arabella and Ariadne auf Naxos and, in the field of modernism, Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes .

Marcela Machotková has made guest appearances at the Brno Opera House , at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw (1969), at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna , at the Teatro Liceu in Barcelona and at the Edinburgh Festival . In 1967 she was heard at the Wiener Festwochen (as Marie in The Bartered Bride ), and in the same year she sang in The Hague and Amsterdam . She sang Rusalka in guest performances in Moscow and Budapest . In 1970 she went on a tour of Italy . In 1973 she made a guest appearance as Lisa in Pique Dame in Dublin . In 1975/76 she toured the former Soviet Union with the roles of Tatjana and Lisa .

Her voice is preserved through several audio documents, mainly published by Supraphon . In 1979 the Panton Verlag published a recital by Marcela Machotková. She sings Agnes in two complete recordings of the opera Zwei Widwen , under the baton of conductors Jaroslav Krombholc and František Jílek . There is also a complete recording of Dvořák's opera The Jacobin under Jiří Pinkas with the Janáček Opera Orchestra Brno.

In 1975 she received the title of "Honored Artist". In March 2017 she was awarded the Czech Thalia Prize 2016 in the field of opera for her life's work.

Marcela Machotková, who worked with surgeon Dr. Zdeněk Machotka died in December 2021 at the age of 90.
