Marco Bontá

Marco Aurelio Bontá Costa (born November 1, 1899 in Santiago de Chile , † November 21, 1974 ibid) was a Chilean painter .

Bontá studied from 1913 at the Escuela de Bellas Artes with Ricardo Richon Brunet , Juan Francisco González and Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor and belongs to the artist group of the Generación del Trece . 1918-19 he worked as a cartoonist for the magazine La Unión in Valparaíso. On a study trip from 1927 he visited Holland, Belgium, Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

In 1932 he became a professor at the School of Applied Arts at the Universidad de Chile , and later taught at the School of Applied Arts . In 1932 he became a member of the commission for the reorganization of the Escuela de Bellas Artes .

In 1938 he was commissioned by the Venezuelan government to organize the teaching of applied arts in this country and devoted himself to this task until 1943. In 1945 he was elected President of the Asociación Chilena de Pintores y Escultores . In addition, he continued to devote himself to his extensive activities in teaching, art theory and art promotion. He became the first director of the Instituto de Extensión de Artes Plásticas of the Universidad de Chile and in 1947 founded the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo . In 1964 he was honored as a member of the Academia de Bellas Artes . Several of his works are in the possession of the Museo Nacionál de Bellas Artes and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo .
