Marek Halter
Marek Halter (born January 27, 1936 in Warsaw ) is a Polish-French Jewish artist and author .
Life
Marek Halter's family fled to the Soviet-occupied part after the German conquest of Poland in 1939 and ended up in the Uzbek Soviet Republic after 1941 . The family was only able to return to Poland in 1946, but emigrated to France in 1950 . In Paris , Halter became a student of the mime Marcel Marceau . He studied painting at the École des beaux-arts . From 1955 to 1957 he stayed in Buenos Aires , where he had his first exhibition.
Back in Paris he had further exhibitions in galleries. He wrote a large number of essays and novels taking up subjects of Judaism, including a trilogy of historical novels about female characters from the Bible: Sarah , Tsippora and Lilah, the sister of Ezra . In 2006 he added a novel about Mary to his Bible au féminin . Halter was politically involved in the initiative to free the political prisoner Gilad Shalit and is a member of the Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme . He himself counts many politicians from Israel and France among his interlocutors. His report Tzedek / Les Justes about those who saved the lives of persecuted Jews during World War II was shown at the 1995 Berlinale . His autobiographical La mémoire d'Abraham has been sold over 25 million times worldwide.
On his initiative, a Collège Universitaire Français was founded in St. Petersburg and Moscow in 1991/92 , and he headed the one in Moscow until 2007. Halter was made an officer of the Legion of Honor in 2008.
Halter's novel-like portrayal of his autobiography has been questioned in detail by critics, such as his compatriot, the Jewish Holocaust researcher Michał Borwicz . In articles in Le Point and Le Nouvel Observateur magazines , he was accused of lying (mensonges) .
