Margarethe Ottillinger

Margarethe Ottillinger (also Ottilinger ; born June 6, 1919 in Steinbach , Lower Austria ; † November 30, 1992 ibid) was an Austrian civil servant and manager.

Life

Margarethe Ottillinger studied at what was then the University of World Trade (now the University of Economics and Business ) in Vienna and obtained her doctorate in commercial science in 1941 . After the end of the war, she worked as a consultant for the Austrian Federal Minister for Asset Protection and Economic Planning, Peter Krauland .

On November 5, 1948, Ottillinger was arrested by Soviet soldiers from Krauland's car at the Allied zone border (Ennsbrücke) on the way to Vienna , sentenced to 25 years in prison for " espionage " and spent seven years in Soviet prisons . It is unclear whether this sensational affair was a " shot across the bow " of the minister, who is considered to be very friendly to the US, or whether he himself was involved in the Ottillinger affair, as the journalist Beppo Beyerl suggested in 2006.

In 1955, Ottillinger was released from prison, seriously ill, and returned to Austria, where she arrived in Wiener Neustadt on June 25th. The picture that showed her lying on a stretcher went around the world. In the same year she started working for the ÖMV . As early as 1956, she was the only woman appointed to the board and held this position until her retirement in 1982.

In 1956 she was rehabilitated by the Soviet judiciary. On March 16, 1994, posthumously, she was finally acquitted of all allegations made against her on the basis of the Russian “Law on the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression”.

The deeply religious Ottillinger, who was active in her last years as a tertiary of an order, appeared among other things as a generous sponsor of the construction of the so-called Wotruba Church . She was buried at the Mauer cemetery. The square in front of this church in Vienna- Liesing (23rd district) was named after her Ottillingerplatz in 2012 (ceremonial inauguration on June 9, 2013) . In 2017 the Margarete-Ottillinger-Park in Liesing was named after her .
