Margarita Salas Falgueras, 1st Marquesa de Canero (born November 30, 1938 in Valdés (Asturias) , Spain ; † November 7, 2019 in Madrid ), was a Spanish biochemist , molecular geneticist and university professor. She invented a quick, easy, and reliable way to replicate traces of DNA large enough for full genetic analysis .

Live and act

Salas took the chemistry and medicine entrance exams in Madrid at the age of 16 and studied chemistry at Complutense University in Madrid . She did her doctorate with Alberto Sols on the anomeric specificity of glucose-6-phosphate isomerase. From 1964 to 1967 she conducted research at the science faculty of the School of Medicine at the University of New York in the laboratory of Nobel Prize winner Severo Ochoa . In Spain, she then established the country's first research team in the field of molecular biology . She taught molecular biology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid for 24 years and, together with her husband Eladio Viñuela, was responsible for promoting Spanish research in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology. She developed a fast and reliable DNA analysis that was able to establish itself in a variety of practical applications. Her invention, in which she used the φ29 DNA polymerase , has become indispensable in areas such as oncology , forensics and archeology . She has supervised more than 40 PhD students, published over 200 scientific articles and held 8 patents. In 2008 she was raised to the Spanish nobility by King Juan Carlos as Marquesa de Canero . She was an honorary professor at the Spanish National Research Council ( CSIC ) in the field of biotechnology .

Salas died in November 2019 at the age of 80.
