The Maria-Ward-Gymnasium in Augsburg is a modern language and economics high school for girls and boys. The school sponsor is the school organization of the Diocese of Augsburg .
history
In 1662 the English nun Mary Poyntz (1593–1667) founded the Herz Jesu monastery and the “Higher School for Daughters in the English Institute” in Augsburg with nine co-sisters . Mary Poyntz was a close collaborator of Maria Ward (1585-1645), the founder of the Congregatio Jesu ("English Misses"). In a foundation letter from Bishop Johann Christoph von Freyberg from 1680, knitting, sewing and embroidery as well as English, Latin, German, Italian and French were taught in the institute at that time. Since 1687, the school and the neighboring monastery have been located at their current location in Augsburg, north of the Frauentor in the vicinity of the Carmelite Monastery of Augsburg and the St. Stephan Canonical Monastery . It has been possible to take the final exams there since 1930.
During the Third Reich , more precisely between the years 1941 and 1945, teaching by the nuns was forbidden. In 1944 the school building was almost completely destroyed in the air raids on Augsburg . When the sisters were allowed to run the school again in 1948, the English Institute was divided into a grammar school and a middle school (today's Maria Ward Realschule Augsburg ).
In 1985 the former institute of the "English" was named after the founder of the order, Maria Ward. Finally, in 1992, the religious order handed over the sponsorship to the Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg.
Until 2010, the Maria-Ward-Gymnasium Augsburg was purely a girls 'high school, but maintained a long-term cooperation with the Augsburg boys' high school in St. Stephan . Since the 2010 school year, boys have also had the opportunity to attend the Maria Ward Gymnasium, at least in full-day classes.
activities
International exchange is an important part of the overall school concept for the former girls' grammar school. For the pupils, trips to partner schools in England, France, Spain, Italy, India, but also to the German Pasewalk ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ) are organized on a regular basis . Sports weeks, musical and artistic courses as well as school camp weeks complete the offer.
