Maria Owings Shriver Schwarzenegger (born November 6, 1955 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American journalist and bestselling author .

She worked for many years as a reporter and news anchor for NBC and has since written several books. She is the daughter of Eunice Kennedy and Sargent Shriver (former US Ambassador to France from 1968 to 1970), who was the Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate in 1972 , and a niece of the assassinated US President John F. Kennedy and his brothers Robert F. Kennedy and Senator Edward Kennedy .

On April 26, 1986, she married Arnold Schwarzenegger , whom the then American studies student had met in 1977 at a tennis tournament organized by the Kennedys. They have four children together, including the author Katherine Schwarzenegger and the actor Patrick Schwarzenegger . In May 2011, the couple announced their separation. On July 1, 2011, she filed for divorce.

In Last Action Hero (1993), she made a cameo at the side of her husband .

In late April 2013, she announced that she would resume her previous job as a television correspondent and return to NBC as a special correspondent.
