Mariano Arista (born July 26, 1802 in San Luis Potosí , Mexico , † August 7, 1855 on board the English steamer Tagus ) was a well-known veteran of many Mexican wars in the nineteenth century, and between 1851 and 1853 President of Mexico.

Life

Mariano Arista was born on July 26, 1802 in San Luis Potosí.

Originally an officer in the Spanish army, Arista later belonged to the revolutionary army of Agustín de Iturbide . Arista later served under Antonio López de Santa Anna , the then Mexican dictator who tried to crush the Texas Revolution of 1836.

In 1846, Arista was given command of the Northern Army and was dispatched to drive American troops from Mexican territory in Texas . The result of this armed conflict sparked the bloody Mexican-American War (1846–1848). During this war, Arista was in command of the Mexican troops in the Battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Resaca de la Palma .

Arista's military armor is the subject of discussion for those analyzing this conflict. While quite intrepid personally, Arista was a devoted "republicano" - a member of Mexico's liberal camp and therefore the natural opponent of its large Conservative General Staff. The resulting political division within his staff led to defeats in both battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palama.

After Resaca de la Palma, the Mexican government recalled Arista and he was removed from his command. Later acquitted of any guilt for the defeats at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, Arista spent the remainder of the war as an official who fought little.

In 1851 Arista José Joaquín de Herrera followed as president. He tried to put the state finances back in order, but failed. The resistance of the conservatives was concentrated in a conspiracy in which on October 20, 1852 an extraordinary congress was called in Guadalajara and the impeachment of Aristas was announced ("Plan del Hospicio"). Aristas found no support. On January 5, 1853, he resigned from the office of President. His successor was Juan Bautista Ceballos.

Mariano Arista died on August 7, 1855 on board the English steamer Tagus , which was en route from Lisbon to France. His remains were transferred to Mexico in 1880, and the liberal camp called him a national hero.
