Maribo is a Danish town on Lake Maribo on the island of Lolland in the Sjælland region . Maribo is the administrative seat of Lolland Municipality , which was formed after the municipal reform in 2007 from the existing municipalities of Højreby , Holeby , Maribo , Nakskov , Ravnsborg , Rudbjerg and Rødby . The place has 5790 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) on an area of 154 km².

history

Maribo developed around a Birgitten monastery , which was founded by Erik von Pommern around 1416 as a subsidiary of the mother monastery Vadstena in Sweden . The cathedral was built in place of an earlier wooden church from around 1410, completed in 1470 and served as a parish church from the 16th century. The monastery buildings were demolished in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Attractions

Directly on the lakeshore is the former monastery church, which in 1803 became the bishopric of the diocese for Lolland and Falster . Contrary to Birgitta's building regulations for Vadstena, the three-aisled hall church with a large gable roof has a widened central nave; It was probably initially planned to build the church as a basilica.

The port of Bandholm is about seven kilometers north of the city center. A museum railway runs from Maribo to Bandholm in the summer . The islands of Askø and Lilleø also belonged to the Maribo municipality . They can be reached from Bandholm by ferry. Adjacent to Bandholm is the Knuthenborg Safari Park , the largest safari park in Scandinavia with an area of almost 6 km² .
