history
The United States Army Corps of Engineers selected Marietta as the base for the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad from 1838 to 1842 . During this time, the city grew explosively.
On April 12, 1862, a group of Northerners stole a steam locomotive here . This theft led to a locomotive chase and went down in US history as the Andrews robbery .
The city played a major role during the Atlanta Campaign from May to September 1864 , as the Battle of Marietta , the Battle of Kolb's Farm, and the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain took place here. The battlefields are now in Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park . In the cemeteries of Marietta Confederate Cemetery and the Marietta National Cemetery thousands have been buried by the dead of the Civil War.
On August 17, 1915, Marietta hit the national headlines after the murder accused Leo Frank was lynched by a crowd here. It was the first widely publicized anti-Semitic- motivated assassination attempt in United States history.
