Marilyn Manson is an American rock band . Her front man Brian Hugh Warner is called Marilyn Manson as a stage name . Because he is the dominant personality in both the group and the media, the term Marilyn Manson is often used to refer to the person Warner.

Both the band and stage name Marilyn Manson and the stage name of many band members ( Daisy Berkowitz , Madonna Wayne Gacy , Twiggy Ramirez , Sara Lee Lucas, Olivia Newton Bundy, Ginger Fish , Gidget Gein ) are compositions from the name of an icon ( Marilyn Monroe , Madonna , Olivia Newton-John ) on the one hand and a serial killer or criminal on the other ( John Wayne Gacy , Richard Ramírez , Henry Lee Lucas , Albert Fish , Ted Bundy , Charles Manson , Ed Gein ). This is intended to illustrate the indivisible togetherness of good and bad . To date, the group has sold over 50 million records worldwide.

Band history

The band was founded in 1989 and has changed band members several times over the years and thus also the style.

Marilyn Manson started out as a group in Tampa Bay , Florida under the name Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids . Her appearances had less of the dark style of the later years, but more of a cartoon character with punk influences . At first they were hardly known beyond Florida until they were mentioned by Trent Reznor ( Nine Inch Nails ), whom Manson met while working as a music journalist. Marilyn Manson's first CD, Portrait of an American Family , was released on Nothing Records , a Trent Reznor label. A joint tour of the two bands followed.

The members of the group are mostly dressed grotesquely and unconventionally. Their fan base increased mainly through shocking appearances in public, as they were previously cultivated by KISS or Alice Cooper .

The mixture of their fame, their music and such performances led to protests, constant attacks on the religious right and finally to performance bans in some cities in the United States. In addition, the band was blamed in the American press for the rampage at Columbine High School . However, it later turned out that the assassins were not fans of Marilyn Manson and the criticism was therefore unjustified. Because of these accusations, the band withdrew for three months and wondered if and how it should go on. Marilyn Manson then wrote the song Disposable Teens .

Manson also became known outside the music scene for his short appearance in the documentary Bowling for Columbine , when he questions these allegations and portrays the bigotry of American society and holds it responsible. In 2003, Marilyn Manson's fifth studio album, The Golden Age of Grotesque, hit the record stores, the first of the two albums he wrote with Tim Skold rather than Twiggy Ramirez. Then, in 2004, the first best-of was released with the title Lest We Forget: The Best Of . After a three-year hiatus, the new album Eat Me, Drink Me was released on June 1, 2007 . The first single, Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides the Hand) was released on May 25, 2007.

For the "Eat Me, Drink Me Tour 2007" Tim Skold took over the guitar, Rob Holliday the bass, Ginger Fish the drums and Chris Vrenna the keyboard.

On January 9th, 2008 it was announced on the homepage of Marilyn Manson and through a bulletin in Myspace that Twiggy Ramirez, who had been the main songwriter of the band until Holy Wood, had rejoined the band and returned to the role on the "Rape the World Tour" of the bassist will take over. According to the report, Tim Skold left the band amicably, and a renewed collaboration in the future is not ruled out. Rob Holliday takes his place as the new guitarist.

On May 22, 2009, the seventh album The High End of Low was released , on which the collaboration with Twiggy Ramirez had already been reflected. Since no suitable guitarist could be found, Twiggy Ramirez switched to guitar and Andy Gerold (ex-Ashes Divide) took the place of bassist.

The eighth album Born Villain was released on May 1, 2012. On March 13, 2012, the first single No Reflection was released.

The ninth album The Pale Emperor was released on January 19, 2015. Third Day of a Seven Day Binge was featured as a promo single on BBC Radio 1's Rock Show on October 26, 2014 . The official single for this album is Deep Six (release date December 16, 2014); the music video for it was presented on YouTube three days later.

The tenth album Heaven Upside Down was released on October 6, 2017. The first single was released on September 12, 2017, We know where you fucking live , the corresponding video was released just a few days later. On October 10, 2017, the band released the video for the song Say10 , in which singer Manson and his best friend, actor Johnny Depp , also played. Another new video came out on November 14, 2017, this time for the single Kill4Me . Here, too, Depp played the leading role. The last two videos were directed by Bill Yukich.

As part of the Heaven Upside Down Tour 2017/2018 - in addition to numerous US shows, 16 concerts in Europe were planned for 2017 - Warner injured his ankle on September 29 at a gig in Pittsburgh. The next day he was hit by a falling part of the stage while performing in New York's Hammerstein Ballroom and broke his fibula. Nine US concerts between October 2nd and 14th had to be canceled. The following gigs, including appearances in Vienna , Zurich , Hamburg , Düsseldorf , Munich and Berlin , he completed in a wheelchair and with a metal leg prosthesis.

On October 25, 2017, Marilyn Manson announced the separation from Twiggy Ramirez without giving a reason . This had recently been accused of rape by his former partner, the musician Jessicka Addams (ex- Jack Off Jill ). Since then, the bass has been played by Juan Alderete de la Peña, former bassist of The Mars Volta, which dissolved in 2013 .

In 2018 the band continued their tour. 24 gigs in the USA, Canada and Mexico as well as 20 appearances in Europe were planned, including appearances at the Festival de Nîmes in the south of France , at three download festivals in Donington , Madrid and Brétigny-sur-Orge , at Rock am Ring , at Rock im Park and at Nova Rock . In addition, the band announced four additional concerts in Oslo , Stockholm , Milan and Dresden for June 2018 .

Music genre

The music style of the band can basically be located in the area of harder rock music; However, it is difficult to narrow down to a sub-genre, since different styles of music or influences are combined, such as industrial rock , hard rock , alternative rock and elements of metal .
