Marion Leon "Mel" Speer is a former American racing car driver .

Career in motorsport

Marion Speer competed in sports car races in the 1970s and 1980s and drove almost exclusively in North America. There mainly in the IMSA-GT series and from 1981 in the IMSA-GTP series . Since some races in the IMSA-GTP series also counted towards the sports car world championship , he also competed in this racing series. His first notable result was the 12-hour race at Sebring in 1977 , which he finished 14th in the overall standings.

Your best seasons he drove the early 1980s, 1981, 1982 and 1983. In 1981 he was in the World Sportscar Championship scoring 6-hour race at Daytona Fifth and finished in 1982 in both the 12-hour race at Sebring and the 6 -Hours of Riverside finished third in the final standings.

Speer achieved his best position in international motorsport in July 1982 with second place in the 250-mile race in Daytona with partner Terry Wolters in a Porsche 935JLP-2 . A victory in a championship run remained with him.

Marion Speer competed in Europe a few times. He took part in the Le Mans 24 hour race twice, in 1984 and 1985 . Both missions ended in failure.
