Mark 84 is an American multi-purpose free - fall bomb . It is also the largest bomb in the Mk-80 series . It entered service during the Vietnam War and was used as a heavy unguided bomb.
Development and use
Although the weight of the Mark 84 is given as 907.2 kg, this depends on your wing sets, detonators and delay sets and can therefore vary between 894.5 and 944.8 kg. In terms of construction, it is a cast steel jacket filled with 428.6 kg of the high-explosive Tritonal .
It is also used as a warhead of various guided bombs such as the GBU-10 / GBU-24 / GBU-27 Paveway laser- guided bombs , the GBU-15 electro-optical bomb and the GBU-31 JDAM .
