Mark Francis Brzezinski (born April 7, 1965 ) is an American lawyer , diplomat and foreign policy expert. He was the United States Ambassador to Sweden .

He is the son of the former security advisor Zbigniew Brzeziński and the grandson of the Polish diplomat Tadeusz Brzeziński . On his mother's side he has Czech roots, his mother Emilie Benes Brzezinski is the great niece of the former Czech President Edvard Beneš . His sister is Mika Brzezinski , who hosts the Morning Joe program, and his brother is military expert Ian Brzezinski . He is also the cousin of the author Matthew Brzezinski .

biography

Brzezinski graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts in constitutional law , received a JD from the University of Virginia Law School, and also has a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Oxford . He received a Fulbright Foundation scholarship to study the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Poland . From 1996 to 1999 he was with Hogan & Hartson LLP in Washington, DC

From 1999 to 2001, Brzezinski worked for the Clinton Administration as Director of Russian / Eurasian Affairs and Director of Southern European Affairs for the National Security Council at the White House . In this role he was also the White House Coordinator for Promoting Democracy and the Rule of Law in the region.

He was married to the lawyer Carolyn M. Campbell from 1991 to 2008 in his first marriage. in 2008 he was married to Natalia Lopatniuk, a freelance writer and blogger with the Huffington Post, since 2008 . They have one child, Aurora Emilie.

Brzezinski was a foreign policy advisor on Barack Obama's campaign team and was appointed ambassador to Sweden on October 18, 2011, succeeding Matthew Barzun .

criticism

Wolfgang Effenberger from the Neue Rheinische Zeitung counts Mark Brzezinski to the “family clan” of the Brzezinski, who had already determined the geopolitics of the USA under Obama's predecessors. In 2004, Mark was one of the driving forces behind the Orange Revolution in Ukraine.
