life and career

After completing his education at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire , Burns initially wanted to be a priest , but then decided to act after two years of military service with the Royal Hussars. In the 1960s, the blond-haired actor made a name for himself with the portrayal of elegant upper-class characters in costume films, for example, directed by Tony Richardson in The attack of the light brigade from 1968. At times he was considered one of the most popular young actors from Great Britain.

Mark Burns was also hired by international directors, about twice by Luchino Visconti : In Death in Venice (1971) he played the important supporting role of the pianist Alfred; and in Ludwig II (1972) he was seen alongside Helmut Berger as Hans von Bülow . Burns also took on leading roles in mostly smaller film productions, for example in the mystery film Death Is a Woman (1966) or the horror film House of the Living Dead (1974). For the latter film, Burns won an award at the Sitges Festival for Best Actor. In the 1980s, the offers decreased noticeably, he had one of his last significant roles in 1990 in Bullseye - The crazy diamond coup . A few months before his death, he took on a small role as a priest in the fantasy film Der Sternwanderer . The film did not appear until after Burns' death and was credited to mind.

Between 1960 and 2007 Burns starred in a total of over 40 feature films and about as many television series. He was also regularly active on British theater stages. He died in 2007 at the age of 71 after a protracted cancer. The actor was married twice: from 1976 until his divorce in 1983 with fellow actor Jane How (* 1950), and from 1990 until his death in 2007 with model Paulene Stone (* 1941). Mark Burns had a daughter.
