Mark Steedman
Mark Steedman (born September 18, 1946 ) is a British linguist and psychologist .
Life
Mark Steedman is Professor of Cognitive Science in the Computer Science Department at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland . After studying experimental psychology at the University of Sussex , he did his doctorate in Edinburgh in Artificial Intelligence on the formal description of musical perception at HC Longuet-Higgins. After teaching positions in Brighton, Warwick and Edinburgh, Steedman accepted a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania . Since 1998 he has taught and researched at the University of Edinburgh. In 2002 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the British Academy . In 2006 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .
Services
Steedman became known in linguistics through the formal grammar theory he founded, Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG), which is in direct competition with the approaches of the linguist Noam Chomsky . He also explores the relationship between syntax and intonation (phonetics) and the relationship between computers and music .
