Markgräfler wine

The typical Markgräfler wine is from the grape variety Chasselas produced wine , which partly simply as Markgraefler is called. This vine was in 1780 by Baden Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden in the Swiss Vevey into Markgraeflerland brought. Due to the favorable climate, Burgundy varieties also thrive .

Growing area

The Markgräflerland area is part of the Baden cultivation area and comprises the German area between Basel and Freiburg. The southernmost vineyard is located on the so-called Grenzacher Horn on the boundary of the Grenzach-Wyhlen community . The winegrowing area extends over Weil am Rhein and Binzen or from Tüllinger Berg ( Lörrach ) to just before the gates of Freiburg ( St. Georgen or Schallstadt ) in the north and includes the foothills between the Rhine plain and the Black Forest . The delimitation of the wine-growing area is thus broader than the historical region of Markgräflerland. A total of around 3,000 hectares is cultivated in the Markgräflerland wine-growing area . Gutedel vines are grown on around 40 percent of this area. In second place with around 30 percent is the Pinot Noir (as of 2003).

Wine festivals

The showcase for Markgräfler wine is the Müllheim wine market, which has been held every year on the last Friday in April since 1873 and is the oldest wine market in Baden. Furthermore, in Freiburg-St. Georgen the St. Georgen Wine Festival, at which, in addition to the "Freiburg" wines from Munzingen am Tuniberg and St. Georgen, especially Markgräfler wines from Schallstadt- Wolfenweiler, Pfaffenweiler or Ehrenstetten are offered.
