history

In 1881, the Bockenheimer Diakonissenverein, founded in 1876, opened a deaconess home in Falkstrasse, to which a small hospital with 15 beds was attached. In 1907 the surgeon Otto Loewe was appointed to the Diakonissenheim. He had one of the first X-ray machines installed in Frankfurt and made it possible for the deaconess association to acquire a neighboring property in 1926. With financial support from the city, the deaconess association had the two buildings rebuilt and expanded into a new hospital with 174 beds. It was named Markus Hospital in 1928; Loewe was appointed his chief physician. After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he was dismissed because of his Jewish origins. He died of severe abuse after the November pogroms in 1938 .

In connection with the necessary expansion of the new Protestant Markus Hospital built in the 1950s on the Ginnheimer Höhe, in the north-eastern continuation of the street, at the intersection of Wilhelm-Epstein-Straße and Ginnheimer Landstraße, the original plan was to extensively renovate and refurbish the old St. Markus Hospital in Falkstrasse. In 2010 the name of the sponsoring company was changed to Agaplesion Frankfurter Diakonie-Kliniken non-profit GmbH . This is intended to give expression to the affiliation to the nationwide Agaplesion Group, to which the Markus Hospital and the Bethanien Hospital have belonged since 2002.
