Markus Lutz (born July 9, 1772 in Basel , † October 19, 1835 in Läufelfingen ; reformed ; resident in Basel) was a Swiss theologian and historian .

life and work

Markus Lutz, son of a shoemaker and later judge, studied theology in Basel from 1792 to 1796. In 1794 he was private tutor in Signau and in 1795 senior teacher in Büren an der Aare , from 1796 to 1798 parish vicar in Rothenfluh . From 1798 until his death in 1835 he worked as a pastor in Läufelfingen. He was a founding member of the Swiss History Research Society , a member of the Swiss Charitable Society and inspector of the Rothenfluh School.

In addition to schoolbooks and instructional writings (similar to Jeremias Gotthelf ), Lutz published numerous historical-geographical books, including the "Complete Description of the Swiss Country, or Geographical-Statistical Hand-Lexicon ..." (1827-1835, first shorter version 1822). He also wrote several school books and from 1826 to 1831 published the magazine "Rauracis". He owned an extensive private library (today in the University Library of Basel ) and collected archival materials. During the turmoil of separation from 1832–1833, he kept his position in Läufelfingen, unlike most of the Basel country pastors, because he sympathized with the freedom movement.
