Markus Müller (born August 23, 1967 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian physician, professor of internal medicine and clinical pharmacology . Since October 1, 2015 he has been Rector of the Medical University of Vienna .

Life

Müller graduated from the Theresianum in Vienna in 1985 and then began studying human medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna . In 1993 he received his doctorate “ sub auspiciis praesidentis ” as a doctor of general medicine. Between 1993 and 2000 he trained as a specialist in internal medicine at the university clinics for emergency medicine and internal medicine I-III at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). In 1995 he did a research stay at the Laboratory for Diabetes Research in Gothenburg , Sweden, to develop microdialysis in clinical research. 2000–2001 he was a visiting professor at the University of Florida . In 2004 he was appointed university professor and head of the University Clinic for Clinical Pharmacology at the Medical University of Vienna at the Vienna General Hospital. Markus Müller has published around 200 scientific publications, including in the New England Journal of Medicine .

In May 2015 he was elected Rector of the Medical University of Vienna. On October 1, 2015, he took over from Wolfgang Schütz . In October 2017 he was elected for a further four-year term from October 2019 to September 2023.

In June 2018 he was elected President of the Supreme Sanitary Council. He succeeded Sylvia Schwarz in this role , who announced her resignation in March 2018.

In November 2019 he was elected a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Honors

Markus Müller was honored with the Tanabe Award 2004 from the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (ACCP) “in acknowledgment of innovations in clinical pharmacology trials”.

In September 2018 Markus Müller received the ACCP Honorary Fellowship Award from the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.
