Marsyas painter
The Marsyas Painter was a vase painter of the Attic - red-figure style. His works are dated between 370 and 340/30 BC. Dated.
The Marsyas Painter is perhaps the best painter of Attic red-figure vase painting of the 2nd half of the 4th century BC. In the so-called Kerch style . It got its emergency name from the depiction of Marsyas on a pelike , which is now in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg . Currently 13 red-figure works are attributed to him. These include, above all, larger vessels such as Lebetes gamikoi , Peliken, Hydria and Lekaniden . Only a few years ago the Marsyas painter was assigned ten Panathenaic price amphoras , which allows a new assessment.
The Marsyas painter depicts themes from the world of women and everyday scenes as well as mythological motifs. He paints harmonious yet monumental figures, his brushwork shows security. He is a master of spatial representation and plays with foreshortening and contraction, which creates statuary effects. Fabrics and garments are detailed and voluminous. His masterpiece is a Lebes gamikos in the Hermitage that was found in Kerch . Here he shows the epaúlia , the festival of the newlywed wife. On a pelike with Peleus and Thetis , he shows what is perhaps the best female nude study in Greek vase painting. He often uses additional colors such as white and gold, but cautiously. By Panos Valavanis he received the Eleusinian painter equated.
